Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Party primaries play a pivotal role in shaping the democratic process by determining the candidates who represent political parties in elections. Ideally, primaries should promote inclusivity, transparency, and meritocracy, allowing parties to field candidates who align with their ideologies and have the support of their members (Adamu & Yusuf, 2023). In Nigeria, however, party primaries are often marred by irregularities, including vote-buying, imposition of candidates, and internal party conflicts. Maiduguri Local Government, as the political and administrative hub of Borno State, provides a compelling case study for understanding the dynamics of candidate selection through party primaries. While some argue that primaries strengthen party democracy, others contend that they perpetuate political elitism and disenfranchise grassroots members (Kareem & Abubakar, 2024). This study examines the impact of party primaries on candidate selection in Maiduguri, exploring both the challenges and opportunities they present for democratic governance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The integrity of party primaries in Nigeria has been questioned due to widespread allegations of malpractice and manipulation. In Maiduguri Local Government, these issues are particularly pronounced, with party members expressing concerns about the lack of transparency and fairness in candidate selection (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). The imposition of candidates by party elites often leads to internal divisions, voter apathy, and weakened party structures. Furthermore, the exclusion of qualified aspirants undermines the democratic ideals that primaries are meant to uphold. This study seeks to investigate the factors influencing party primaries in Maiduguri and their implications for candidate selection, with the aim of identifying strategies to enhance the process.
